Into the Theatre

Yesterday the entire NCA team moved into the theatre. While set and video designer Huub Laurens was building the set, Bob took the stage with the artists. In between scenes the artists tried on their costumes designed by Lilian ter Horst. Here’s a first impression, enjoy!

Beautiful Kethya

Bob is blessed with two beautiful assistants who are among the most promising dancers and choreographers of Cambodia. After being Bob’s choreography assistant in the first three weeks of the rehearsals, Abelle is now proving to be a very talented production assistant as well, while Kethya works wonders with her classical based but highly contemporary dance moves.

Rehearsing at Amrita

dansers NCAYesterday the group has worked on a scene in which Sopheap tries to get the continuously falling dancers back on their feet. The scene not only refers to Cambodia’s past, but also to the struggles that young artists have to face.
Later, during a black out, the musicians worked on a new composition. They will play a piece of music in Look At Us Now that has never been heard in Cambodia before! Two weeks to go before opening night!!

This week, Huub Laurens, Lilian Ter Horst and Femke de Wild arrived in Phnom Penh. The team joined Bob and the group in rehearsals right away. Lilian started sketching and talking to her small team of costume students, Femke helped out with more complicated dance moves and Huub is sketching, filming and will start his workshop at Meta Hause this week-end with 8 visual artists. Rehesarsals are going well and we seem to be on schedule.

What happens when…?

What happens when beauty and strength fades; what if you have to choose between working as a dancer or marrying the love of your life; how can you combine a professional career with taking care of your family; and what if you get injured and have to stop doing what you love to do most..?

During the first rehearsals, the artists talked about topics they somehow want to discuss in their new performance. The questions the New Cambodian Artists ask themselves are relevant for all kinds of performers and in particular for dancers. They’re not only relevant in Cambodia – they are universal.
